RESONANCE FREQUENCY ANALYSIS FOR IMPLANT STABILITY MEASUREMENTS. A review

چکیده

The resonance frequency analysis (RFA) technique for implant stability measurements was developed by Meredith and coworkers more than 20 years ago. RFA makes use of a transducer (peg), which is attached to the implant and excited over a range of frequencies by electro-magnetic waves to measure the resonance frequency (RF) of the transducer. The underlying RF measurements in Hz are translated to Implant Stability Quotients (ISQ) units from 1 (lowest stability) to 100 ISQ units (highest stability). A new generation of RFA technology has been developed consisting of a small pen-like battery-driven instrument (Penguin) used together with reusable transducers (MulTiPegTM). These are made from biocompatible titanium and can be autoclaved and used numerous times. The instrument can be packed in a sterile pouch and kept on the surgical tray and used by the surgeon without jeopardizing sterility. RFA measures implant stability in bending as a function of interface stiffness and correlates with implant displacement, i.e. micro-mobility, under lateral loading. The ISQ value is determined by the local bone density and is influenced by implant placement technique, implant design, healing time and exposed implant height above the alveolar crest. It seems like implants with low and/or falling ISQ values pose an increased risk for failure compared with implants with high and/or increasing values. The RFA technique can be used at any stage during treatment as one additional parameter to support decision-making during implant treatment and follow-up. For instance, authors have proposed that certain levels of stability should be achieved/reached in order to commence immediate and early loading.

Resonance frequency analysis of implant stability in augmented and non-augmented sinus sites

Background and aim:  Although there have been substantial developments in dental implant therapies, achieving good implant stability (ISQ >60) for implants inserted in augmented sinus sites appears to be challenging in comparison with non-augmented sites due to the high prevalence of bone resorption in posterior regions of maxilla. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the time required to a...

ISQ calculation evaluation of in vitro laser scanning vibrometry-captured resonance frequency

BACKGROUND Implant stability testing at various stages of implant therapy by means of resonance frequency analysis is extensively used. The overall measurement outcome is a function of the resulting stiffness of three entities: surrounding bone, bone-implant complex, and implant-Smartpeg complex. The influence of the latter on the overall measurement results is presently unknown. It can be inve...

Stability measurements of craniofacial implants by means of resonance frequency analysis. A clinical pilot study.

Nineteen patients previously treated with 52 implants for anchorage of craniofacial prostheses were subjected to implant stability measurements by means of resonance frequency analysis (RFA), six months to 15 years after implant placement. The resonance frequency (RF) of a transducer attached to the implant abutment was measured by using a frequency response analyser, a personal computer (PC) a...

Comparative analysis of 2 resonance frequency measurement devices: Osstell Mentor and Osstell ISQ.

OBJECTIVE Comparing reliability of Osstell Mentor and Osstell ISQ in implant stability measurement, and assessing whether their measurements are comparable. MATERIALS AND METHOD Implant stability was measured with both devices on 58 implants in 15 patients. Six measurements were completed with each device with 2 different transducers (3 measurements with each transducer), that is, 12 measurem...

Clinical evaluation of osseointegration using resonance frequency analysis

The stability of the implant at the time of placement and during the development of the osseointegration process are the two major issues governing the implant survival. Implant stability is a mechanical phenomenon related to local factors such as bone quality, quantity, type of placement technique and type of implant used. The application of a user-friendly, clinically reliable, non-invasive m...
